Dr. Mohammad Hossein Tavana is an Attorney at Law (qualified in Iran) and practices as a solo practitioner with a demonstrated history of acting as counsel, arbitrator and mediator. He has been involved in dozens of arbitrations in various industries, including energy, banking, pharmaceutical, construction, commodities trading and sport, under UNCITRAL rules as well as a wide range of institutional rules. He regularly advises in different fields of Iranian and international trade law and often drafts expert opinions on Iranian law or Sharia as the applicable law in both cross-border litigation and arbitration proceedings.

He is a member of the Board of Tehran Regional Arbitration Centre and a member of Iran Central Bar Association. He previously served as Project Manager at Tehran Regional Arbitration Centre (2018-2020), research associate at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London (2016), visiting scholar at the Department of Law, Stockholm University (2015), and research assistant at the Center for Islamic and Middle Eastern Legal Studies, University of Zurich (2012-2013).

Dr. Tavana obtained his PhD with distinction, summa cum laude, in the field of international arbitration law from University of Zurich. The thesis titled ‘The Role of Sharia in International Commercial Arbitration: An Enquiry into the Potential Convergence’. He holds an LL.M. Degree in International Commercial Arbitration Law awarded by Stockholm University and Bachelor of Laws from Shahid Beheshti (National) University (Iran). He also studied private international law at the Academy of International Law (The Hague) and investment arbitration at the International Academy for Arbitration Law (Paris).

Dr. Tavana is a native Farsi speaker and is fluent in English. He knows German and Arabic at the intermediate level as well as basic French.
